A Study on Life and Support Needs of the Adult Siblings of People with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Abstract

|
The purpose of this study was to investigate the life experience and support needs of the adult siblings of people with autism spectrum disorders. The participants were eight adult siblings who have lived with people with autism spectrum disorders. Individual interviews were conducted and the interview data were transcribed. Through the coding process and constant comparative method, main themes and sub-themes were derived. For reliability and validity on this study, member check, and external audits were used. Six main themes and 45 sub-themes were emerged. The Six main themes on life experience were the hidden story in mind, the slightly different life because of siblings with autism spectrum disorders, the inseparable life yoke, the future to embrace and share together, the support needs for siblings with autism spectrum disorders and the support needs of siblings of people with autism spectrum disorders. Based on the result, implications on expanding family support areas including people with autism spectrum disorders in adulthood and increasing social attention were discussed.
